A journey into colonial Mauritius
The Tea Route is a unique experience that brings you into Mauritian history and its colonial heritage. The tour starts at Domaine des Aubineaux, a colonial house built in 1872 and still furnished with its original pieces.
Next is the Bois Cheri tea factory, where you follow the production from the inside all the way to the packaging. The visit ends with a tasting of relaxing, scented tea varieties in a cottage facing a lake, surrounded by tea plantations and stunning views.
A few miles further south, at Saint Aubin, another colonial house welcomes you for a tasteful creole lunch on the terrace. The estate produces sugarcane and is also known for its delicious rum. Follow its production at the distillery and taste the different flavours.
Your day ends at La Maison de la Vanille, where you discover the long process that turns an orchid into vanilla.
Good to know
Domaine des Aubineaux: built in 1872 with teak and local woods taken from demolished ships. Its attic holds antiques, furniture and paintings from as far back as the 18th century.
Bois Cheri: the first tea plantation on the island, dating back to 1892.
Saint Aubin: an estate with more than 200 years of history, where rum has been produced since 1819.
Vanilla: it comes from an orchid whose flowers must be pollinated by hand, one reason the pods are so precious.
