Climb Black River Peak, the roof of Mauritius
At 828 metres, Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, also known as Black River Peak, is the highest mountain in Mauritius.
The trail is very easy to follow, and it takes on average 2 hours to reach the summit, where you are rewarded with views over Le Morne Brabant, La Tourelle du Tamarin and Ile aux Benitiers.
Depending on the weather, you might also spot waterfalls along the hike. Snacks, fruit and juice keep you going, and the whole half-day hike takes about 4 hours.
Good to know
A forest with a comeback story: Black River Gorges National Park, created in 1994, protects some of the last native forest of Mauritius and has been central to the recovery of the pink pigeon and the Mauritius kestrel.
Look for the national flower: the red, bell-shaped Trochetia boutoniana, the national flower of Mauritius, is one to spot in this forest.
A garden of rare plants: the park is home to more than 300 species of flowering plants, including several found nowhere else in the world.
A park named for its stones: Black River Gorges takes its name from the black stones that line its river.

First: the trail
Follow a trail that is very easy to follow, through the forest of Black River Gorges.

Depending on the weather, you might spot waterfalls from the path.
The summit
After about 2 hours, reach the top and take in the views over Le Morne Brabant, La Tourelle du Tamarin and Ile aux Benitiers.
Last: back down
Head back down the same trail, refuelled with snacks, fruit and juice.

The hike starts at the Riverview Commercial Centre in Black River, where we meet at 7:50 am. Transport is not included in the excursion price, but you can add a private return transfer from your accommodation in the Extras section when you book:
