Your day begins at La Vanille Nature Park, a nature reserve home to more than 1,000 turtles and 2,000 crocodiles, as well as macaques, deer and geckos, with aquariums, a fossil museum and an insectarium with a remarkable collection of butterflies.
An adventure through the sugarcane fields leads to Rochester Falls, a beautiful volcanic rock formation with stunning waterfalls. At the southernmost point of Mauritius, the Weeping Rock stands on a sea cliff above a rugged coast, where you will be amazed by the sound of powerful waves crashing against it. After a pleasant walk in the shade of casuarina trees, you reach Gris Gris beach.
The journey continues along the south coast, between deserted beaches and beautiful landscapes, to a refreshing dip on a paradisiacal beach at the foot of the imposing Le Morne Brabant mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Good to know
Rochester Falls: famous for its jagged, rectangular basalt rocks, shaped by erosion. The falls have appeared in Bollywood films.
The Weeping Rock: a rock mass about 10 metres high where retreating waves look like tears. Local legend says that from the right angle it resembles the profile of the Mauritian poet Robert Edward Hart.
Gris Gris beach: there is no coral reef here, so waves and currents are very strong. It is a place to admire the sea, not to swim in.
Maconde viewpoint: one of the most popular viewpoints in Mauritius, with views over the turquoise southwest coast and Le Morne Brabant.
