Step back in time, with everything taken care of

Your first stop is the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, which dates back to 1768 and is considered the oldest in the southern hemisphere. Inside, countless scents greet you, from camphor and sandalwood to nutmeg and ginger. Walk among more than 500 species of exotic plants, including lotus, water lilies and palms, and admire the picturesque Château Mon Plaisir, former residence of the governor De La Bourdonnais, and the white wrought iron gate that won awards at international exhibitions in London and Paris.
Then climb to the heights of Port Louis to Fort Adelaide, built by the British in 1835, with a picturesque view from the Moka mountain range to the harbour.
After this trip into the eighteenth century, there is time for the typical bazaar, between spices and souvenirs, and for the famous brands of the Caudan Waterfront shopping mall.
Good to know
A garden built to break a monopoly: Pierre Poivre brought seeds and plants from all over the world to Mauritius, partly to break the Dutch spice monopoly. On the tour you can smell the nutmeg and ginger for yourself.
Giants from the Amazon: the garden's famous long pond is home to giant Victoria amazonica water lilies, which you will see on your visit.
A palm that flowers once in 50 years: the Talipot palm blossoms only after about 50 years, and this is the place to admire one.
The best view in the capital: Fort Adelaide is one of the few fortifications of British origin left on the island, and from its hill, about 100 metres up, it looks over Port Louis and the harbour.
